Backpackers
Tourism Research Australia

In 2008 international visitors spent 14 million nights in backpacker accommodation, while domestic visitors spent 1.4 million nights in backpacker accommodation.  There were 426,000 domestic visitors and 559,000 international visitors who used backpacker accommodation.

These Snapshots present information on the backpacker accommodation sector in 2005 and a profile of those visitors.

A backpacker is defined as backpacker or hostel accommodation.  Visitors do not necessarily spend all of their nights in backpacker accommodation; some nights are spent in other types of accommodation.

This Snapshot data has been primarily extracted from the Tourism Research Australia International and National Visitor Surveys.
