The Australian Government is committed to maximising tourism's net economic contribution to the Australian economy and to fostering an industry that promotes the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
Business Ready Program for Indigenous Tourism

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism is focussed on increasing Indigenous participation in the tourism industry through supply side capacity building measures. The marketing of Indigenous tourism internationally is undertaken by Tourism Australia.

The Business Ready Program for Indigenous Tourism (BRPIT) is a $3.8 million four year pilot program which has assisted existing and start-up Indigenous tourism businesses through mentoring support. The main goal of the program is to develop Indigenous operators' business skills and the knowledge required to establish and run a commercially viable tourism operation.

The 2008 Budget included an additional $1.8 million for the development of Indigenous Tourism. Key components of the Budget announcement include funding for BRPIT through 2008-09 and funding for the promotion of Indigenous tourism internationally. This extension of BRPIT provides an opportunity to continue assisting in the development of a stronger Indigenous tourism sector.

The program is administered by AusIndustry. Further information can be located on the AusIndustry website.
