On 24 February 2008, the Prime Minister announced the Australian Government would formally support a Football Federation Australia (FFA) bid to host the 2018 or 2022 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup. The Minister for Sport and the Minister for Tourism have joint responsibility for the Australian Government's role in supporting the bid, and are developing a support package in conjunction with other Government Ministers on a whole-of-government basis.
The FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world and a bid to host the event presents a unique opportunity to showcase Australia's world-class sporting infrastructure and event management expertise, as well as broader Australian cultural and tourism experiences.
A decision on the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups will be made by the 24 member FIFA Executive Committee on 2 December 2010.
