About the Destination Management Planning Working Group
The Destination Management Planning Working Group was established to encourage destinations to undertake destination management planning under the National Long-Term Tourism Strategy and the update to the strategy, Tourism 2020.
Destination management planning allows individual destinations to develop integrated tourism plans that include consideration of all tourism development needs. These include infrastructure, labour, training, and product development, as well as complementary marketing strategies to promote their destination. Destinations are also encouraged to link their plans with their relevant state tourism strategy and Tourism 2020.
The Destination Management Planning Working Group has completed its activities and has closed under the direction of the Tourism Minister's Meeting.

Priorities and achievements
The Destination Management Planning Working Group has completed its work agenda. The working group's activities against its key priority actions include:
- Undertake pilot to improve heritage engagement in a National Landscape (Great Ocean Road)
A report on the Great Ocean Road National Landscape was developed by a sub committee of the working group.
The Great Ocean Road National Landscape Heritage Project Workshop Report(see Related documents) has relevance to other National Landscape regions and heritage significant destinations.
The report has been circulated to all state tourism organisations and parks agencies to encourage an improved focus on cultural heritage in all destination planning processes.
- Utilise the Sustainable Tourism Online portal to disseminate key information on best practice models and information for destination management planning
The working group has built on the Sustainable Tourism online portal in the destination management field by providing access to leading tourism research and tools in three main areas—Destinations and Communities, Business Operations, and Parks and Culture—in addition to broader sustainable tourism themes.
- Make key recommendations to improve funding bodies support of strategic outcomes resulting from destination management planning processes, particularly the Australian Tourism Development Program review
The working group has developed funding principles to improve strategic outcomes for destination management planning.
Experience Development Strategies pilots.
The working group identified a gap in tourism product development and adoption of destination management planning at a destination level, and worked to drive innovation through two pilot applications of Experience Development Strategies. One pilot was in the Flinders Ranges National Landscape, and the other in Cairns-Townsville Tourism Hubs.
The tender for the Flinders Ranges National Landscape was awarded to Planning for People. The pilot study has been completed (see Related documents).
The tender for Cairns/Townsville Tourism Hubs was awarded to AEC Group. Work on the pilot study has been completed (see Related documents).
- Practitioner's Guide
The Australian Regional Tourism Network (ARTN) was engaged to facilitate a Destination Management Planning workshop in Canberra on 12 October 2011. From this workshop, ARTN will produce a Practitioner's Guide for destination management planning to be made available to tourism destinations as a self-help tool that aims to guide regional tourism organisations through the processes of destination management planning.
