About the Australia–China Tourism Summit 2011

In June 2011, the Australia–China Summit was held in Cairns. The event was attended by over 300 participants, including around fifty representatives from government, industry and academia in China.

The summit produced valuable outcomes to strengthen Australia’s position in the growing Chinese travel market. It followed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening tourism cooperation between the two countries during the Prime Minister’s visit to China in April 2011.

The summit reinforced the message that China is not one large homogenous tourism market—it is multidimensional, and comprises different demographic, geographic and economic segments with different tastes. These factors must be considered and planned for carefully if Australia is to maintain and enhance its appeal as a tourism destination.

The China Tourism Investment Roundtable and the China Tourism Research Symposium were held in conjunction with the summit and produced useful outcomes, including new research insights for industry and new Chinese partners for collaboration.

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism would like to thank all participants, sponsors and speakers involved in the Australia–China Tourism Summit 2011.
