Troubadour Terrace, Bonaparte Basin
Location
Area NT07-1 is located in the northeastern Timor Sea about 330 km north-northwest of Darwin and about 180 km north of the Darwin to Bayu–Undan gas pipeline (Figures 1 and 2). Water depths in the release area range from about 80 to 530 m. The release area overlies the Mesozoic to Cenozoic sediments of the northeastern Bonaparte Basin. Area NT07-1 comprises 56 blocks (4715 km2) and is adjacent to current offshore petroleum exploration permits. The release area is in close proximity to the Evans Shoal, Lynedoch and Greater Sunrise gas fields. Recent drilling in the region has resulted in further gas discoveries at Caldita 1 (ConocoPhillips, August 2005) and Barossa 1, ST1 (ConocoPhillips, October 2006). The Caldita field has been appraised by the drilling of Caldita 2 (ConocoPhillips, February 2007). Exploration also continued in proximity to the Evans Shoal field with Evans Shoal South 1 being drilled in July 2006 (Santos).
The Bonaparte Basin is a proven hydrocarbon province. It has estimated
reserves of 134.6 MMbbls (21.4 GL) of oil, 23.5 TCF (665.8 BCM) of gas,
382.5 MMbbls (60.8 GL) of LPG and 599.6 MMbbls (95.3 GL) of condensate as
at January 2005 (Geoscience Australia, 2004). Hydrocarbon reserves in the
most significant hydrocarbon fields of the northeastern Bonaparte Basin
are as follows; Sunrise 7.68 TCF gas, 300 MMbbls condensate (Woodside, 2003)
and Evans Shoal 8.3 TCF dry gas (NTDPIFM, 2006). No official estimate is
available for the Caldita 1 discovery, but potentially this is a large multi-TCF
discovery. Gas reserves in the Abadi field in Indonesian waters are 5 TCF
dry gas (Yui, 2003). The Bayu–Undan to Wickham Point gas pipeline
is complete, and the single train from the Wickham Point plant commenced
export of LNG to Asia in February 2006. As further discoveries are made
within the region, the delivery of gas to the Darwin domestic market and
the possibility of a second LNG train are becoming increasingly viable.
