Ashmore Platform, Bonaparte Basin
Location
Areas AC07-1, AC07-2, AC07-3, AC07-4 and AC07-5 are located about 600 km north of Derby in the Timor Sea and are situated in Australia’s Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands that abuts the border with Indonesia. Water depths range from about 20 to 600 m (Figure 1). The release areas are within the Bonaparte Basin, with the largest portion of these areas being located on the eastern and southern margins of the Ashmore Platform, where Cretaceous and Cenozoic strata overlie heavily faulted and folded Permo-Triassic sediments. The southeastern parts of areas AC07-1, AC07-2, AC07-3 and AC07-5 extend across into the margin of the Vulcan Sub-basin (Figures 2 and 3). Areas AC07-3 and AC07-5 are located to the north and west of the Puffin oil accumulation, respectively. Area AC07-2 is located to the northwest of the Jabiru oil accumulation. However, exploration wells located in all of the five aforementioned release areas have had only oil and gas indications.
Area AC07-1 comprises 26 graticular blocks or parts thereof (approximately 1925 km2), and water depths range from 25 to 550 m.
Area AC07-2 comprises 18 graticular blocks or parts thereof (approximately 1465 km2), and water depths range from 15 to 450 m.
Area AC07-3 comprises 10 graticular blocks (approximately 835 km2), and water depths range from 90 to 140 m.
Area AC07-4 comprises 30 graticular blocks (approximately 2505 km2), and water depths range from 5 to 600 m.
Area AC07-5 comprises 31 graticular blocks (approximately 2590 km2), and
water depths range from 20 to 250 m.
