Australia’s water and waste industries are primarily involved with the provision of potable water and the processing of sewage, but also include solid-waste management, water recycling and water re-use facilities.
In 2008-09, EEO participants in the Water and Waste sector used 13.6 PJ, representing approximately less than 1 percent of Australia’s total energy use.
Energy Efficiency in the Water and Waste Sector
Corporations in the water and waste sectors have identified a range of energy efficiency opportunities including pump optimisation, greater control of aeration processes and some biogas re-use facilities.
EEO participants in the water and waste sector have reported identifying 0.3 PJ of energy savings, and adopting 0.08 PJ of energy savings. ‘Adopted’ energy savings include opportunities reported under the categories of implemented, commenced implementation or to be implemented.

^ Energy savings totals include the energy savings of opportunities with a greater than four year payback, voluntarily reported by corporations.
Water and Waste Significant Opportunities Register COMING SOON
The Significant Opportunities Register contains a cross-section of the significant opportunities described by water and waste corporations in their EEO Public Reports, in a spreadsheet format that can be filtered to find specific types of opportunities of interest. The register aims to facilitate access to different ideas that may assist corporations to identify opportunities to increase energy efficiency.
