Workshops in May 2009

Approximately 200 corporations have now conducted energy efficiency assessments and reported publicly on the outcomes of those assessments under the EEO program. This year's EEO workshops provided a forum in which the experiences and lessons learned by industry practitioners could be collectively shared and discussed.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Day 1              Maintaining the Momentum on Energy Efficiency

Day 1 of the workshops was designed for senior/corporate management responsible for coordinating and reporting on assessments.

Presentations included:

  • Opening presentation – Update on EEO and Energy Policy [PDF,526KB]
    Louise Vickery and Paul Johnson from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism gave an overview of the EEO program, recent results from public reports and current energy policy.
  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting [PDF,587KB]
    David Rossiter from the Department of Climate Change delivered a presentation on how the EEO program fits within the climate change policy framework, along with the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme and the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.
  • Investor Perspective – Phil Preston[PDF,172KB]
  • Investor Perspective – Andrew Barr[PDF,89KB]
    Phil Preston from Seacliff Consulting and Andrew Barr from the AIST spoke about how investors are increasingly looking at the risks posed by climate change and how they can invest responsibly to mitigate these.
  • EEO Public and Government Reporting [PDF,130kb]
    Various speakers from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism presented drafts of updated Public and Government reporting templates.
  • EEO Verification [PDF,122KB]
    Belinda Fraser from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism presented on how the Department proposes to verify that participating corporations have complied with the key requirements of the EEO program, and how companies can best prepare for verification.

Day 2             Sharing lessons from first assessments

Day Two was designed for operational and technical staff, and energy service providers responsible for undertaking energy assessments, identifying and implementing energy efficiency opportunities and tracking energy savings.

Interactive group discussions focused around the following topics:

  • Leadership, people and communication
  • Data analysis and opportunity identification
  • Making the business case for implementation
  • Building on first assessments – the next steps to implementing opportunities and maintaining the momentum

Presentations included:

    Albert Dessi from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism presented data and overall trends from the opportunities reported by industry in the first round of public reports.
  • Data Analysis [PDF,204KB]
    Albert Dessi from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism gave an overview of what kinds of data analysis the Department requires from participating corporations and the tools available to help industry undertake this analysis.
  • Energy Mass Balances [PDF,133KB]
    Tom Cawley from Balance Energy presented on the practical benefits of undertaking an EMB, using Nyrstar as a case example.
  • Representative Assessments [PDF,687KB]
    Geoff Andrews from Genesis Now gave a detailed presentation on how to assess energy use by undertaking a representative assessment of a sample of similar sites or processes.
  • Industry Assistance Programs [PDF,78KB]
    Stephen Wright from the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism presented on recently announced industry assistance packages which form part of the Climate Change Action Fund. He asked workshop delegates for feedback on initial program design factors, and the barriers and challenges they face to implement opportunities.

At each of the workshops, presenters from leading companies spoke about how their businesses have approached the challenges and opportunities presented by Energy Efficiency Opportunities assessments.
