The Australian Government is considering an offshore greenhouse gas (GHG) storage assessment acreage release in late 2013 or early 2014.
Nominations have now closed for areas to be considered for inclusion in the planned offshore GHG acreage release.
The government is now considering areas for release. Information on areas and deadlines for applications for offshore GHG assessment permits will be published in the Australian Government Notices Gazette and updated on this RET web page.
About offshore GHGacreage release
The Australian Government's carbon capture and storage legislation regime provides for a system of rights and regulatory oversight for the geological storage of GHG in offshore waters under Commonwealth jurisdiction.
Offshore acreage release enables prospective GHG storage operators to obtain the necessary injection and storage rights and provides the investment certainty needed to develop commercial storage operations.
2009 GHG acreage release
The 2013-14 GHG acreage release will be the second release of offshore GHG storage assessment acreage in Australia. The first release was in 2009 and has been finalised.
