Carbon dioxide capture and geological storage (CCS) is a technology aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere. It involves the capture, transportation and long-term storage of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in deep geological formations underground.
CCS is one of many options which the Australian Government is pursuing to help Australia and the world reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian Government is committed to developing these technologies within both the domestic and international spheres.
The Australian Government is in the process of developing legislation to enable CCS activity in Commonwealth offshore waters. Several states are also developing legislation to enable CCS in their jurisdictions.
Upcoming Events
National CCS Week – Providing a focus for CCS as an essential part of the global greenhouse gas mitigation portfolio, the National CCS week will be held over six days, from 28 November to 3 December 2010. During the week, a range of CCS-based events around Australia will be conducted, including the inaugural National CCS Conference - providing a major opportunity to be informed, to debate and to connect with others involved in the multi-faceted field of carbon capture and storage.
