Energy Facts, Statistics, and Publications

Australia's Energy sector is critical to the enhancement of Australia's economic prosperity. The energy sector not only underpins our competitiveness as a producer of goods and services but also greatly contributes to Australia's wealth through the export of our abundant energy resources including coal, gas and uranium.

Key Facts on Australia's Energy Industry [PDF, 1,435KB] are available for download, including information about Australia's energy consumption, Australia's electricity generation, energy prices, and the value of Australian energy exports.

Additional Energy Facts and Statistics of interest:

  • Australia is energy rich:
    • 24 per cent (4,043 PJ) of energy produced in Australia is consumed domestically, with 76 per cent (12,770 PJ) being exported. Imports (1,600 PJ) account for 28 per cent of domestic consumption.
    • Coal accounts for 52 per cent (6,580 PJ) of energy exports by energy content and 59 per cent by value.
    • Uranium accounts for 37 per cent (4,820 PJ) of energy exports by energy content and 2 per cent by value.
    • LNG accounts for 10 per cent (680 PJ) of energy exports by energy content and 14 per cent by value.
    • Crude oil and refined products account for 4 per cent (460 PJ) of energy exports by energy content and 22 per cent by value.
    • Overall, energy exports accounted for 24 per cent of total exports in 2006-07.
  • Over the last ten years, energy consumption has been growing at an average annual rate of 2.2 per cent, with consumption expected to increase some 45 per cent to nearly 8,200 PJ over the next 25 years.
  • Australia is dependent on fossil fuels for energy production:
    • Fossil fuels provide 96 per cent (5,380 PJ) of the energy consumed.
    • Renewable sources provide 4 per cent (260 PJ) of the energy consumed.
  • Electricity production is the largest user of energy:
    • Fossil fuels were used to produce 92 per cent of electricity in 2005-06.
  • Energy accounts for 70 per cent (401 Mt) of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.
