Australia is leading the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Energy Regulatory (APER) Forum, a voluntary group engaging in the exchange of information on energy regulation, market and clean energy development initiatives across the Asia-Pacific.
The APER Forum will succeed the Energy Regulatory and Market Development (ERMD) Forum, which existed as a project run by the Power Generation and Transmission Task Force, under the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate.
The final ERMD Forum Steering Committee meeting was held in Sydney, on 3 November 2010. At this meeting, members agreed that there was value in continuing the dialogue provided by the ERMD Forum and provided in-principle support to create a new information-sharing group. The 3rd Energy Regulatory and Market Development Forum record of meeting.
As an interim measure, Australia has offered to host the first meeting of the APER Forum Steering Committee. This meeting will be held via teleconference on Wednesday 9 November 2011.
A letter of invitation has been sent to all former APP Partner countries formally inviting them to join the new Forum, and to participate in the inaugural Steering Committee meeting. Invitations have also been extended to Singapore and New Zealand (as agreed at the final ERMD Forum Steering Committee meeting).
The APER Forum is still in the process of being established, and a formal commitment to join has not yet been received from invited member countries. It is anticipated that the official establishment of the Forum to take place at the 9 November Steering Committee meeting.
The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has agreed to host the first meeting of the Forum Conference in July or August 2012. Further details for this event will be confirmed in the coming months, however it is anticipated that the meeting will be held in Washington DC, United States.
Previous ERMD Forum Bulletins were a key communication tool to update members on Forum progress and outcomes.
