Enhancing Australia's Economic Prosperity

Energy

The Australian Government is committed to the provision of adequate, reliable and affordable energy to meet future energy consumption needs and to underpin strong economic growth, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
Clean Energy Technologies

The development of commercially viable low or zero emission energy technologies is essential to achieving significant and affordable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Energy production is the primary source of Australia's emissions and Australia's current level of energy demand is expected to double by 2050. Clean energy technologies will play a critical role in moving to a low emissions future while meeting this increasing energy demand.

Clean energy technologies will contribute significantly to achieving Australia's 2050 target of an 80% reduction in greenhouse emissions on 2000 levels. These technologies can also position Australia towards continued economic growth from its natural endowments in coal, gas and renewable energy resources.

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism is the lead agency for clean energy technology development. The department is responsible for a range of initiatives that provide assistance for research, development and large scale demonstration of clean energy technologies. This includes the expanded $5 billion Clean Energy Initiative (CEI).

The CEI was established in May 2009 and pending the establishment of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) these programs will continue to be administered under existing arrangements.

Components of the CEI include:

  • CCS Flagships Program
Supporting construction and demonstration of large scale integrated carbon capture and storage projects in Australia.
  • Solar Flagships Program
Supporting construction and demonstration of large scale solar power stations in Australia.
  • Australian Centre for Renewable Energy
A new body that will promote the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable energy technologies.
  • Renewable Energy Future Fund
The Fund will support the development and deployment of large and small scale renewable energy projects and will enhance take-up of industrial, commercial and residential energy efficiency. The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency will administer the Fund.

The Renewable Energy Target is also encouraging the development and deployment of clean energy technologies in Australia.

The Australian Government also provides support for energy technology development through a range of other measures, including:

There are also a range of other clean energy initiatives announced by the Australian Government on 10 July 2011 that will be administered by other Government agencies.  These include the:

  • Clean Energy Finance Corporation
  • Clean Energy Skills Program
  • Clean Energy Technology.
