The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism provides advice and policy support to the Australian Government regarding Australia's resources, energy and tourism sectors. The Department develops and delivers policies to increase Australia's international competitiveness, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
Vacation Program

The RET Vacation Program provides university students the opportunity to develop work experience within the Department and the wider Australian Public Service. We are looking for candidates who have high attention to detail, excellent communication, research and analytical skills and an ability to work in a team.

Positions are based in Canberra, employment is offered as a non-ongoing employee at the APS Level 2 for a period of up to three months over the summer break.

Typical tasks may include:

  • Providing administrative and program support
  • Assisting in the provision of high quality strategic and analytical advice to the Minister, and to the Departmental Executive
  • Preparing briefs, correspondence, speeches and other material for the Minister and Executive
  • Conducting research and analysis to support policy development, advice and briefing
  • Providing presentations
  • Liaison with stakeholders in industry, government and research institutions (both domestically and internationally)
  • Project planning

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for candidates applying for the Vacation Program include:

  • having completed at least their first year of study;
  • working toward a degree of interest to RET;
  • a solid academic performance (for example, a credit average);
  • Australian citizenship; and
  • the capacity to obtain a protected security clearance.

Note: These positions are based in Canberra; successful applicants who are not based in Canberra will be responsible for their own accommodation and travel for the duration of the Program.
